Brief history of the department

    The Department of Archeology was established with the establishment of the College of Archeology - University of Al-Qadisiyah, according to the book of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research / Department of Studies, Planning and Follow-up No. (THM 3865) on (9/10/2015), which includes the approval of His Excellency the Minister on the recommendations of the formed ministerial committee Pursuant to the Ministerial Order No. (S/5/1266) on 4/5/2014, which includes the establishment of the Faculty of Archeology, with mention of the scientific departments.

The Department of Archeology in the College of Archeology seeks to meet the requirements of archaeological knowledge and look forward to advanced archaeological studies.

Section objectives
The department aims to achieve:

Work on introducing society to the importance of Iraqi antiquities as the identity of this country and its human heritage since ancient times.
Preparing and preparing qualified scientific staff to work in archaeological institutions and museums.
Numbers of staff specialized in architecture, ancient arts, tourist guidance, and staff specialized in reading clay figures that contain cuneiform writings (Sumerian, ancient Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian and other ancient languages), due to the presence of huge numbers of them that exceed thousands preserved in the stores of the Iraqi Museum waiting for someone to decipher them to learn a lot about The civilization and legacy of this country full of the achievements of the ancient Iraqis in terms of science, knowledge and laws.
Creating a job market for archaeological finds and tourist guides derived from the Mesopotamian heritage.
strengths:

1- The department has a scientific staff specialized in teaching scientific subjects for all academic levels, with experience and scientific and professional ability in managing the department and completing the tasks required by the Deanship of the College and the Presidency of the University at the required speed.

2- The department has the appropriate and advanced infrastructure in disseminating scientific knowledge to students from classrooms equipped with the available educational means.

3- The department possesses, through its teaching staff, the scientific ability to participate in international, local and Arab conferences that are held inside and outside the country, as well as carrying out many workshops, seminars and panel discussions in cooperation with the College Deanship.

4- The department, in cooperation with the Deanship of the College, hosts many foreign, Arab and Iraqi visiting professors who work in international, Arab and local universities to give scientific lectures to the professors and students of the department for scientific and knowledge exchange.

5- The department professors are provided with all available and necessary resources in order to carry out their academic and knowledge duties.

6- The professors of the department possess the spirit of cooperation and dedication in their work and the completion of the work as required.

7- The professors of the department participate in events and activities of a humanitarian nature by supporting and supporting charitable institutions that take care of orphans and the families of martyrs and the wounded.

8- The department cooperates with civil society and human rights institutions in order to consolidate the principles of civil society and respect for human rights within Iraqi society by holding workshops and seminars that contribute to raising awareness of these institutions.

9- The department cooperates with scientific and administrative institutions affiliated to state departments and various institutions such as the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Culture, the General Authority for Antiquities and other institutions with regard to matters of a common nature.

10- Since its establishment, the department has been working to increase archaeological awareness among the various classes of society and its institutions in order to preserve the antiquities and heritage of Mesopotamia from loss, theft and illegal trading.

Weaknesses:

1- The department does not have a library specialized in cuneiform studies, despite the department’s necessary need for it and to fill the shortcomings of students, teachers, and researchers who constantly visit the department.

2- The department does not have a laboratory for maintenance and restoration of cuneiform figures in order to clarify this process for students and researchers and to increase scientific awareness among students.

3- There is no mini-museum available in the department that contains manufactured archaeological pieces and models, as well as different types of artifacts, which can be used to raise awareness among students of their antiquities and their original Iraqi heritage.

4- The department does not have many technical devices of scientific use, whose presence leads to increasing the awareness of students and teachers in knowing their effects and the way to detect them.

5- The department needs financial resources to increase the process of international publishing in journals with international rankings, and what is published in practical research by professors in international journals is from their own money without government support.

6- The lack of adequate financial allocation and lack of it for the department, which contributes to sending teachers and students researchers to increase international institutions for knowledge and scientific exchange, which was limited to the second party, which is the foreign party, in visiting the department and holding workshops with the professors of the department.

7- There are some instructions and laws issued by the Ministry that do not allow or give sufficient powers to heads of departments to carry out their scientific duties freely.

Recommendations:

1- Asking the Deanship of the College and the Presidency of the University to establish a special library for the Cuneiform Studies Department that contains many scientific sources.

2- Requesting the Deanship of the College and the Presidency of the University to establish specialized laboratories in order to benefit from them in the process of spreading scientific knowledge to students and teachers.

3- Requesting the Deanship of the College and the Presidency of the University to provide all financial disciplines to establish a museum for the department containing various artifacts.

4- Asking the Deanship of the College and the Presidency of the University to provide financial specializations for scientific publishing, delegation and participation in scientific, international, Arab and local conferences.

5- Working on modernizing scientific curricula in line with the great development in the field of archeology through the formation of committees on the subject and to visit developed countries in the field of archeology in order to learn about science and

The development of archeology and cuneiform studies.

6- Serious endeavor by the university presidency to accomplish these points by holding a joint meeting with the Deanship of the Faculty of Archeology in which a specific time plan is determined to accomplish these requirements.
